What is the expected lifetime for the different components that builds up the standing rigging when doing moderate sailing?
Chainplates?
Turnbuckles?
Wire I’ve heard is 10 years or 10.000 miles whichevere comes first.
The parts attatching the wires to the mast (do they have a specific name btw)?
Also interested to hear about mast and boom. In my head it is forever, but I assume it will wear in the end.
I will assume saltwater.
Anywhere salt can sit will go first. The more salt, the worse it will corrode. Chainplates, turnbuckles, deck ends of shrouds, …
Any hardware loaded with 50% of ultimate break strength or more for any period will weaken or work-harden. If rigging is allowed to receive shock loads, the attachment points, toggle pins, and tangs will be repeatedly stressed – even in light winds if gusts and high waves are encountered.
The 10-year number is, in my opinion, a number to greatly reduce the liability incurred by insurance companies. It doesn’t cost them ANYTHING to require you to spend money.
You can extend that 10- year number by good maintenance, regular, timely inspections, and conservative sailing habits.
My favorite saying, “don’t expect what you don’t
