Tips for sailing with a dog

For sailing with a dog, plan the boarding routine, time ashore and a recovery method before choosing the first passage. A short trial alongside and then in sheltered water helps you see how the dog responds.

On board

Provide a shaded resting place, fresh water and non-slip footing. Fit a dog flotation aid appropriate to the dog’s size and practise a safe recovery using the equipment carried aboard. Keep the dog clear of moving lines and provide a secure place during docking.
