How can I sail for free?
Sailing as crew can reduce the price of a trip, but an advertised free berth does not necessarily mean there are no expenses or duties. Agree the terms with the skipper before joining.
Ask what is included
Discuss travel to and from the boat, shared food, fuel and marina charges. Ask who pays if the itinerary changes or you leave early. Agree the watch routine, experience expected and whether you can decline a passage that you consider unsafe.
Meet the boat and crew
Check the route, safety briefing, sleeping arrangements and insurance for the kind of trip being offered. A delivery passage and a relaxed coastal cruise can involve very different hours and responsibilities. Confirm any entry or work requirements relevant to the route.
